Program Description

The purpose of the Master's Degree program in art education is to provide students with the opportunity, environment, and resources to explore issues in art education, conduct research on a significant aspect of art education, and enhance their knowledge of art and art education through academic work in art education, studio art and art history courses. The Master of Arts in Art Education is a thirty–six (36) credit hour program of study. All students in this M.A. program complete required courses, write a thesis proposal and thesis under the direction of a thesis committee.

The Master of Arts in Art Education is designed to prepare three groups of graduate students:

  • Option A – School Focus: Those students wanting to enhance their knowledge of art education at the elementary and secondary school levels.
  • Option B – Museum Education Focus: Those students interested in learning about and working in the field of art museum education.
  • Option C – Community-Based Focus: Those students desiring to investigate and conduct professional activities in community-based art organizations.

Students interested in adding Texas Art Teacher Certification (EC-12) to their master's degree should hold a degree in studio art or have completed, prior to applying to the master's program and beginning the certification program, a minimum of 21 credit hours in specific foundational studio art courses. (See last pages of PDF document M.A. Art Education 2010 Admissions and Program Guide.) Certification requires additional coursework in studio art as well as a series of courses in educational methodology, human development, and professional development. Some courses required for certification may also fulfill master's degree requirements.

Admissions Eligibility and Application Requirements

To apply for the Master of Arts in Art Education, you must have a bachelor's degree with a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA from an accredited institution and hold an undergraduate major in art education, studio art, or art history. However, special consideration can be given to applicants with related baccalaureate degrees and experience in art teaching or museum education.
