Viewpoint Lecture Series 2009

The Department of Art and Art History at The University of Texas at Austin is pleased to announce that Viewpoint 2009 will be presented for the eighteenth consecutive year. This series of concentrated visits, each lasting several days, are spread throughout the spring semester. Viewpoint is conducted by leading curators, critics, and scholars who are involved in the diverse and multifaceted contemporary art world. The lecturers are always brought in pairs and present various programs including public lectures, seminars, and individual studio critiques with graduate students.

Phung Bui and Leah Ollman are this year's invitees. Phung Bui is an artist and also the publisher of the highly acclaimed weekly newspaper, The Brooklyn Rail. He is also an associate curator for MOMA’s P.S. 1 satellite space. Leah Ollman is a writer and critic for the Los Angeles Times newspaper and a contributing editor for Art in America magazine. Admission to the lectures and seminars is free and the public is cordially invited.

Phong Bui, born in Hui, Vietnam, is an artist, writer, and curatorial advisor at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, Museum of Modern Art affiliate. His numerous installations over the last two years have won him the Award in Art from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Eric Isenbeurger Annual Prize for Installation from the National Academy Museum. He is also Editor and Publisher of the monthly journal The Brooklyn Rail, which offers critical perspectives on arts, politics, and culture in New York City and beyond, as well as The Brooklyn Rail/ Black Square Editions, a publishing venture that focuses on experimental poetry, fiction, prose meditation, artists’ writings, interviews with artists, and art criticism.

Leah Ollman has been writing criticism and features on the visual arts for the Los Angeles Times for over 20 years. She is a Corresponding Editor for Art in America and the author of numerous catalogue essays. Her publications include Strangely Familiar (Aperture, 2008), The Photography of John Brill (Kent, 2002), and William Kentridge: Weighing...and Wanting (Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, 2001). She earned her B.A. in Art History and Philosophy from Scripps College and her M.A. in Art History from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. She is currently working on a project exploring the affinities between poetry and photography. She lives in San Diego.
