The Visual Arts Center
Opening September 2010
Future Entry Courtyard, Visual Arts Center
Highlighting internationally acclaimed student and faculty research, the new Visual Arts Center will be a magnet of research and exhibition. It will draw students, scholars, and the public together to share and explore the visual arts. Designed by renown architects Lake|Flato, this adaptive re-use will add an additional 22,000 square feet of space to the Department of Art and Art History.
Construction of the new Visual Arts Center is now underway, and is scheduled for completion in 2010.
If you are looking to discover the art and research of the department, we maintain a year-round exhibition and studio space called the Creative Research Laboratory. Located one mile east of the UT campus at 2832 East Martin Luther King, Jr., Boulevard, it provides exhibitions, seminars, workshops, symposia, and educational outreach for the department.

When completed, the Visual Arts Center will feature:
- New Exhibition Galleries presenting a year-round schedule of exhibitions that provide opportunities to view student and faculty work, present scholarly exhibitions, and highlight the Department of Art and Art History.
- New Graduate Student Studio Spaces that allow students to pursue a rigorous studio practice in the areas of printmaking, design, transmedia, and photography. These studio spaces will be adjacent to the gallery and exhibition space, allowing interaction and exchange for students.
- A New Entrance for the Art Building where members of the campus community and beyond can easily gain access to exhibition spaces, administration, classrooms, lecture halls, studios, and faculty offices.
- A New Main Lobby that will allow access to the Visual Arts Center from lecture halls, classrooms, faculty offices, and studios.
- A New Home for the Mesoamerica Center where students and scholars will gather to research the latest developments in the art, writing, and history of Mesoamerica, in a setting that encourages discussion and exchange.
- A New Outdoor Courtyard for Exhibitions and Events designed as a multi-use space where audiences will view outdoor installation, sculpture, video, and time-based art. Students, faculty, and the community will also use this space for receptions, activities, and events.
- A New Administrative Suite where students, faculty, and the public can centrally connect with departmental administration.
