Artl General Information

Welcome to ARTL. We are located in the Art Building, 1.206. The following site is meant to answer common questions regarding use of this lab. Our hours of operation vary daily; please consult the current schedule on the front door. ARTL is subject to close unexpectedly for classes and demonstrations during regular lab hours.

ARTL is reserved for use by Studio Art and Visual Art Studies students only. The computers in ARTL are set up for working with graphics, layout, audio, and video production. Students who are not Studio majors, or who are not working on projects falling into the above listed categories, should take their work to the Fine Arts Library computer facility, located in the DFA on the 4th floor.

The computers in ARTL are meant for use by students who already have a general knowledge of computers. Instruction manuals for all software are available for in lab use. Proctors can provide limited assistance with specific software/hardware related issues. Proctors/TAs do not teach software/hardware, or grammar.

A teaching assistant or proctor is always on duty during lab hours if you have a technical problem. You may ask for assistance, but ARTL is not a teaching facility and students are expected to know how to use the equipment. Rules for ARTL are posted around the lab; people using the facilities should know them.

What resources are available in ARTL?

The computer resources in ARTL are constantly being updated. Generally, the middle room and hallway computers are meant to be used for graphics, layout, scanning, internet applications, and CD burning. The back room computers are set up for digital foundations classes only. Ask the proctor on duty if you are unsure of the appropriate hardware/software for your project.

What kind of file storage is available in ARTL?

No files or folders may be saved on the desktops of any machine. It is expected for students to bring blank cd's, thumbdrives, and/or a firewire drive. Those in Foundations classes will be given access to firewire drives for temporary data storage, however it is still up to the student to backup data and not the lab's responsibility.

What can I check out from ARTL?

Books, headphones, Wacom tablets with pens, and card readers can be checked out for lab use only. DV cameras, digital cameras, and portable audio recorders are available for 24 hour overnight checkout. Students must fill out a conditions of checking out equipment form once a semester. The late return of overnight check-outs will result in a one week bar on checking out equipment.
