Chair's Welcome

John Yancy

John A. Yancey – Chair, John D. Murchison Regents Professor in Art

On behalf of the Department of Art and Art History, I would like to welcome you to our departmental web site. The Department, comprised of exceptional students, faculty, and staff, is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). Our facilities, activities and programs support a variety of guest artists, guest lecturers, and alumni. I invite you to investigate the activities and achievements of all four divisions of the department: Art History, Design, Studio Art, and Visual Art Studies + Art Education.

The Creative Research Laboratory, currently located in East Austin, continues to fulfill its educational mission with year-round programs of exhibitions, seminars, classes, and workshops. As the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art relocates to its new facilities across campus, an adaptive re-use of their former space in the Art Building will make it possible to house the new UT Visual Arts Center (VAC). Renovations of the space will allow the VAC to fully integrate and highlight internationally acclaimed student and faculty research. It will be a magnet of research and exhibition and will draw students, scholars, and the public together to share and explore the visual arts.

With a distinguished faculty of 89 artists, designers, educators, and historians and a diverse body of 758 bright and committed undergraduate and graduate students, the Department continues to educate the next generation of creative leaders. As Chair of the Department of Art and Art History, I am very proud to share with you the exciting Undergraduate Programs, Graduate Programs, and Special Programs that make us one of the most outstanding art and art history departments in the country.
